나의 작업은 상상 속 동물을 표현한 것이다. 우선 핸드빌딩 기법을 이용하여 다양한 동물의 형태들을 만든다. 그 후, 캔버스에 그림을 그리는 것처럼 완성된 형태 위에 상상 속 동물을 그려넣는다. 나의 작업의 대부분은 즉흥적으로 표현하는 것이 많은데, 그 중에 제일 많은 비중을 차지하는 것이 상상 속 동물을 그리는 작업이다. 이번 작업은 한국의 전통인형 꼭두를 모티브로 하였다. 꼭두는 사람 모양의 해학적인 목각인형으로, 이승과 저승을 오가며 망자의 즐거움을 나누고 고통을 위로하는 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 나는 꼭두를 인물 대신 상상 속의 동물들로 재구성하여, 인간의 탐욕을 풍자하고 인간 외 다른 생명체의 존엄성을 나타내고자 하였다.
My work expresses imaginary animals. First, I mould rough shapes of various animals using handbuilding techniques. And then, I draw imaginary animals on them, just like drawing on a canvas. I do most of my work impromptu, and the most part of it is drawing imaginary animals. This work’s motif is a Korean traditional funerary figure, Kkokdu. Kkokdu is a witty human-shaped wooden figure, which is known as to take a role in sharing the happiness with the passed ones and relieving their sorrows, coming and going between this world and the next world. I reconstituted the Kkokdu with imaginary animals instead of human characters, and intended to satirize on humans’ greed and express other creatures’ dignity.
