Inchin Lee, Korea

  • Inchin Lee studied at Orange Coast College, then at Laguna Beach Art School and California State University of Fullerton. He received both his B.A. and M.A. Degrees on returning to Korea and studying at Hongik University. He has been invited to numerous exhibitions, workshops, symposiums organized in the United States of America, Australia, China and other places. His artworks are in the collection of Victoria and Albert Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art and many other institutions around the world. He served as the Art Director for the Gyeonggi international Ceramic Biennale 2013. He is currently a Professor at the Department of Ceramics and Glass, Hongik University.

Inchin Lee focuses on forms created by stacking objects with the notion of "Collecting & Piling". He has consistently worked on installations rather than creating independent spaces for individual pieces, to present a new interpretation.

Review
I’ve reflected on this for many years- including during a stay at his house- working with him in his studio, and I know that this making magic is intimately entwined with his Buddhist beliefs- that when Inchin started to make pots, he very quickly became at one with the material, and with its potential form. The work currently displayed in the Korean International Ceramic Biennale is an excellent example of the development of a continuing series of composite works that draw their inspiration from both containment, and the void.
